You have explored Newsela as a student. Revisit it using your teacher eyes.
Consider:
Is it a tool you would use? What are you initial reactions based on this exercise? How do you think your students would respond? Are your students using it now? If so, what do they think?
I think this will be useful because it allows students to make the reading easier or harder depending on their reading level
My students do not use this resource as they are in kindergarten. However, I really liked this website and it is definitely one that I will use in the future. I love the leveled text option and I think the highlighting and commenting opportunity is really useful as well. I think this source can allow the students to feel more connected and that no one is falling behind.
I think it is a really helpful tool to use to help children who are not reading on grade level as well as children who have trouble staying organized. I would like to have more time to explore its features before implementing it into my classroom.
This is definitely a tool I would use in my class. My students are using it right now, and it is really helping the struggling reader to understand the text. It is also challenging the students that are above grade level. I like that it differentiates the material without changing the content and that the students can keep track of their comprehension skills. The only thing I would like to see on it is text-to-speech.
I would definitely use Newsela in my classroom because it is a tool that helps differentiate instruction without making the student feel left out. The student is still learning the same content as his/her peers just at a different reading level. I like that students can highlight parts in different colors. I would be able to add prompts to readings and check student comprehension based on their responses. Another great feature is the quiz part because it allows students to track their own comprehension. The teacher can ask for their scores and clear up any misconceptions. I have not seen any of my students in practicum experiences use NewEla, but it is a tool that I will keep in mind for my future classroom.
Newsela is great for informational text, this is also the style of text schools are more focused on teaching in social studies as well as ELA. This tool allows students to look at text and have what they are reading be more simplified and easily understandable.
Newsela is such a great resource. I love that it makes all information inclusive, by being able to level the reading. This is great for almost any type of class where you will want to assign a specific reading but know you have different leveled readers.
If I were teaching a Language Arts or History lesson, I would use Newsela because I have the power to assign readings to my student. Therefore, if I am aware that a student has a particular interest, I may assign an article based on that information.
I think newsela is definitely a tool I would use because you can give it to students in an inclusive classroom and have them all read the same article but at their reading level. This way they can even take quizzes based on what reading comprehension skills they have and that way it is fair for all students.
I think my students would appreciate being able to change the reading level and also take notes and a quiz all in one space.
